How the heck do you get out of paying student loans that are government based like Sallie Mae?
Financial Aid
Dana F asked:
I don’t care about my credit, but is there a a way to get out of paying them without them going after your taxes and paychecks???

There is no easy way, but there are good ways to forgive your student loans, in part or in full!
Peace corps.
Americorips.
National Guard.
Teaching in poor areas.
Practicing medicine in areas doctors are desperately needed.
A list of other student loan forgiveness ideas are in the link below (from Stafford loans). None of them will be quick - the quickest ones take about 4-5 years of full-time work.
One interesting one is VISTA, for 1700 hours of community service, you get over $4k knocked off your debt. Sure, that’s sub-minimum wage, but if you volunteer anyway why not go for one of their approved charities and get some debt forgiveness?
As for other (less ethical) ideas, like just not paying or declaring bankruptcy, they don’t work with student loans. My cousin tried doing missionary work in Brazil, but they found her when she got back to the states and made her pay. Now, if she spent those 3 years with the Peace Corps instead of her mission, 45% of her loan would be gone!
Unless you never want to live in the United States or have dollar-denominated assets again, you will have to pay. The best way to pay as little as possible is just pay on time and don’t get penalties.

Get a job with your education that you borrowed for. Work hard. Pay them back.

Go to this website:
It reads (in part):
Loan Cancellation & Discharge
All loans received under programs authorized by Title IV, of the Higher Education Act can be canceled for several different circumstances including: (1) in the event of your death; or (2) if you become totally and permanently disabled after the loan is disbursed.
In addition, some loan types may qualify for loan discharge under a variety of conditions. Some of the most common cancellation provisions are listed for you below:
the school you attended improperly certified your ability to benefit from the training given.
the school you attended closed while you were in attendance or within 90 days after you withdrew from the school.
A National Defense Student Loan can be canceled in 2 additional circumstances: (1) full-time teaching and (2) military service.
Finally, your obligation to repay your loan may be discharged in bankruptcy. Effective October 8, 1998, your obligation to repay Title IV, HEA student loan and grant liabilities can no longer be canceled (discharged) due to bankruptcy, unless you can successfully prove that repayment of the debt would cause “undue hardship” as defined by case law in your jurisdiction. Previously, student loan and grant liabilities could only be canceled (discharged) due to bankruptcy under certain conditions which, in general, depended on the amount of time between the date on which a loan or grant liability has been due or the date that the bankruptcy was filed, as well as undue hardship.
Also please visit our Discharges section of our main FSA site for additional information on loan cancellation and discharges.
