well im still in high school and i want to go to emory to become a physician, my parents dont have all the money i need for college so im pretty sure i’ll have to get student loans, but i heard that the government really charges a lot with the interest that adds on, anyway is this fair? i mean isnt some of that our tax money anyway? and which part of the government runs this program? i really dont think it’s fair, arn’t they supposed to help us, woudln’t it be better for the economy if everyone who wanted to could get a good education

that’s how it is in some other countries, and it’s not fair that it’s not that way here. as far as charging a lot…yes, but they are some of the lowest interest rate loans you can find. it could be worse.

Whoa. What a warped little tangent over nothing more than hearsay. Nah, i think that’s a bit backwards. Banks offer loans with more strings attached, because banks are a business. Besides they charge a higher interest rate, because banks always get knocked off. No one knocks off Uncle Sam.

Federal student loans do charge interest, but the rates tend to be lower than private lenders. Subsidized student loans deferred interest will you graduate. There are also federal grants which do not have to be repaid.
The government (the Department of Education) spends billions funding the financial aid program each year, much of which is grants that will not be repaid. For the government to provide free higher education to anyone who wanted it, our taxes would be significantly higher.
The interest paid on federal loans is put back into the system to provide loans for other students.
