There are instances where the govt will pay off medical school loans in return for a committment to practice in rural areas that need medically trained people. That’s all I know about it.

There are some programs–the Indian Health Service, for one, will repay loans in return for service.

Yes, I have a friend who financed her education that way. She had to work in underserved communities for three years. There’s also a program where you can do research for the NIH for a couple of years. They won’t generally pay off your loans, but they’ll cancel a portion of them.

Federal student loans do have forgiveness provisions. Contact your lender who will point you to the correct information. Yes, one field for which there is forgiveness is medicine, as a doctor in an underserved (read poor) area of the country for a significant period of time. Your loans are forgiven over time–the longer you work there the more loan is forgiven. Teaching math and science in underserved areas also qualifies for loan forgiveness.
