My federal student loan is in default. I will be offset unless I wait until the rehab is over in April?
United States
Chris S asked:
If my wife and I file seperate can she avoid getting her refund offset? I want to go this route to avoid waiting for the IRS to differentiate what portion of the refund is hers.

Sure you can file separately. If you don’t live in a community property state, don’t claim children or credits, this can work out the same amount as an injured spouse refund.

Contact your student loans administrator and ask for a forbearance or a deferral. It’s a great way to keep your credit looking good and not go in default.
I’m on a forbearance right now.
