With which private student loan companies have you had good experiences?

Financial Aid

Dumblydore asked:

I’m looking for a pretty big to cover for most likely the next three years (although I don’t live on campus, so it’s not THAT much). Have you had any good with companies like MyRichUncle or Think Financial? Recommendations for companies would be good, but I’m REALLY looking for a (or failure) story. Thanks!

  1. Smart Kitty Says:

Sallie Mae or Direct Loans. My husband uses AES.

  2. Salvador L Says:

I have gone with CitiBank and they have good plans and interest rates. I so far have been very pleased!

  3. Becky N Says:

I have LOTS of loans with AES, American Educational Services. Although I’m unhappy with the amount I owe, I am happy that their service is great and the rates are reasonable.

As for a personal success story — I’m able to pay them off if that’s what you mean! If you’re looking to take out this big loan, I would say just be sure it’s for a degree or program that you’re really interested in and will really help you. Education debt is good debt — it actually boosts your credit score in some cases if you pay it on time — and your education is yours forever.

    Good luck!

Sallie Mae is the #1 lender of student loans (including private student loans) in the country. You can find info on their private loans at

Sallie Mae also offers a list of questions you should ask any lender you are thinking of working with, which can help you make your decision.

You should try to get federal student loans first, because they generally have a lower interest rate. Then get private loans to cover the rest. Be conservative and only borrow what you absolutely need - you will have to pay it back eventually.

    Good luck!
