I left school because if hurricane katrina and did not pay my loans for over 180 days, but I went to sallie mae and deferred the loans. They were not forwarded to a collections agencies but the loans did come up on my credit report when I applied for a credit union account, the person helping me said those wouldn’t be an issue since they were deferred.
I am concerned because I will be going back to school and I don’t want this to creep up on me when I try to get loans. I am thinking they were not defaulted because they are still covered by salliemae and not a collections agency but I didn’t make payments for quite a while. Just looking for some reassurance, thanks!
I would also like to know if anyone has successfully borrowed more than the lifetime limit or if you can pay off the loan and continue borrowing if you say, consolidate. Thanks!

If you want to know if you defaulted, call Sallie Mae! You do not want to default on your student loans. It can lead to all kinds of bad. If you default then the guarantor of the loans, i.e. the federal government, takes over. They can do fun things like prevent you from getting more loans, garnishing your wages, and seizing your tax refunds.
Again, call Sallie Mae. It is much better to just hit this head on. They will be much more likely to work with someone who is willing to work with them, than with someone who avoids their phonecalls and makes no effort to repay his loan.

You can call Sallie Mae or you can log on to your loan records at. This website will give you a complete history of your student loans including how much you owe and who currently holds the note on your loan. You will need your federal PIN to access this site. You can obtain your PIN at if you don’t have one. If you have borrowed the maximum available then you cannot borrow any additional loan funds. However, if you pay off a portion then you can re-borrow those funds.
