I was told once that if you take out a Private student loan then you lose all of your Federal Financial Aid for School including federal loans. I don’t think this is true though, why would the loans (private) say “to fill the gap between the federal aid and scholarships”???

The reason it can affect your federal is because you are granted a moderate cost of attendance budget at the school you are attending based on their tuition costs and associated living expenses for that area. If you go behind the financial aid offices back and take out a private direct to consumer loan they (Fin. Aid) must count that loan against your overall Cost of Attendance budget.
You should never, ever, never, ever, never, ever, never, ever, never, ever, never, ever, never, ever, never, ever, never, ever, never, ever, never, ever, never, ever, never, ever, never, ever, never, take out private loans first before using all forms of federal aid you qualify for. Then if you have room in your budget for additional funding and you absolutely need to use it, then you take out a private loan.
